Today, I’m going to show you a way out, if you ever face a situation, where you cannot or are unable to change the default program extension in Windows 10/8/7. I was helping out a client of mine. His operating system had somehow changed the default program extension to a different program; i.e. the file was supposed to open with Outlook – but instead it change into Notepad.

Unable to change Default Program Extension
When I tried to change it back to Outlook under Properties of that file the change option was grayed out
So I tried to right-click on the file and clicked on “Open With” dialog box, because there you have a change box “Always use the selected program to open this kind of file”.
But strangely that check box was grayed out, as well. When I select Outlook, it opens fine. But I was just unable to set it as the default option.
So I went to Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsDefault ProgramsSet Associations and tried to change it there; but sadly I was again unable to. I was totally stumped because the UAC was turned off, the user is a Windows administrator – so there was no reason for the option to be disabled.
That’s when I remembered that there is an option in Windows registry, where you can change it. So I opened the registry and navigated to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerFileExts
Here you have to find your extension under a key called “UserChoice”.
What this registry key does, is if you change the Default file extension, Windows creates this key and adds the value there.
Use WinRAR to extract the file. How to Download and Install Until Dawn?. Download it using the links given below. Until Dawn GamePlay Screen Shots. Until dawn pc download no key. On the Right hand side you’ll seestring value “Progid” under that value you’ll see the current program that is associated with it. So I tried to change that value but it gave me an error: Cannot edit Progid.
Now I realized what was wrong! For some reason, that specific registry key doesn’t have permission to change the file extension, and that was the reason why those options were grayed out for me. So I took ownership for the parent key and inherited the permission.
Now I could delete the “UserChoice” key. Once I deleted it and I rebooted the system. And voilà – now I got this window!
Once I selected the correct program I made it as default and it stayed.
Hope this becomes helpful for someone who runs into a similar problem.

If you’ve ever run into the problem of Windows trying to open up a file in entirely the wrong application, you’re not alone. Although you can get around it using the Open with command, there is a way to make sure you don’t have to do that every time: Learn how to change file associations.
If you aren’t sure which file type that you want to change the association of, right-click the particular file and click Properties from the resulting menu. Look for Type of file at the top of the properties window. The three-letter designation next to that is its file type. You can do it on an individual file type basis, or change all of them from one location.
Changing one file type
The quickest method to change a single file type is to do it from that Open with menu we mentioned. If you want to change more than one file type at a time, skip on to the next section.
Explore iconic settings from the cartoon series. 7 chapters and a total of 70 screens exploring the universe of the Ninja Turtles. Teenage mutant ninja turtles game download. Main features. Step 1: Right-click on a file of the type you wish to change the association for.
Step 2: Select Open with from the resulting menu.
Step 3: Windows will then offer you an app or a list of apps that can act as the default for that file type. If you see the one you want, select it and make sure that the box labeled Always use this app to open [file type] files is ticked.
If you don’t see your preferred app, either search for one using the Look for an app in the Store button or click More apps for an expanded list of already installed applications.
Step 4: When you’ve found the app you want and it has been selected, simply click the gray OK button.
From now on, any files of that type will be opened with your chosen application.
Changing any and all
If you want to change a few different file types — or even all of them — then the Settings menu is the best place to go.
Step 1: Press Windows Key and X and click Settings from the resulting menu.
Alternatively, search for Settings in the Windows search bar and click the relevant result.
Step 2: Select Apps from the list of options.
Step 3: Click Default apps from the left-hand menu.
Step 4: Scroll down if needed, and click Choose default apps by file type.
You’ll then be presented with a list of all of the file types Windows 10 supports with their associated applications on the right-hand side. If a file type doesn’t have a particular application set up to handle it, there will be a gray “+” icon instead.
Step 5: Scroll through the list to find the file type that you want to change the file association for. Click the application or “+” icon to its right.
Step 6: Choose your preferred application from the list that appears and click its corresponding icon.
In the case of some file types, there will be multiple options, whereas others may have none.
If there isn’t an option, you can either go and download a compatible application from the web yourself or choose the Look for an app in the store icon, which will take you to the Microsoft Store. In the window that appears, relevant applications that can open the file type in question will be presented to you.
Once you’ve chosen your preferred application, that’s it! Your file associations are changed and your default application for that particular file type will now be the one you want, rather than something else. You can change others or change them back using the same method, but if you ever get a bit too trigger happy with your file associations and just want to reset them to their defaults, here’s our guide on how to reset Windows.

A: Windows 10 uses file associations to determine which program will automatically open a specific file type on your computer. For example, Microsoft Photos opens .PNG files by default.
If you prefer to use another program to open PNG files, you can change the file association. You can associate a different program, like Microsoft Paint, with all files that have a '.png' extension. After you update the file association, when you double-click a PNG file, it will open in Paint rather than Photos by default.
In Windows 10, there are two methods you can use to change file associations.
Wrong Association You Cannot Be Lyrics
Method 1: Right-click an individual file
To change the file association for a specific file type, right-click a file and select Open With → Choose another app. In the screenshot below, you can see that Microsoft Photos is associated with '.png' files.
After you select 'Choose another app,' the following 'How do you want to open this file?' dialog box appears.
This window allows you to select a default program for the selected file type. Once you have selected a program, check the box next to 'Always use this app to open .png files' and click 'OK'. In the example above, clicking OK would set Paint as the default program for all files with a '.png' extension.
NOTE: To permanently change the file association, make sure to select the option 'Always use this app to open .png files'. If you do not check this box, the file will open once in the selected program, but the file association will not be changed universally.
Method 2: Use the Settings app
This method allows you to view and modify the full list of file associations available in Windows 10. To access this list, open the Start menu (click the Windows icon) and select Settings.
This will open the Settings app, which allows you to choose settings for Devices, Accounts, Network & Internet, System, and more. Click System, which is the first option shown below.
Next, select 'Default apps' from the list of System settings and click 'Choose default apps by file type', which is near the bottom of the right pane.
Wrong Association You Cannot Get
The Default Apps By File Type window displays all the file types currently on your system. Next to each file type, the default program is listed, followed by a list of other programs that can open the file. To modify the default program that opens PNG images, scroll down to the PNG file type and click the icon of the current default program, as shown below.
Select the program you want to set as the default program, such as Paint. The icon of the default app will instantly change to Paint's icon and now all PNG files will automatically open in Paint when you double-click them.
